Undergraduates: Current

Excellence in teaching and research combine to make the Deaprtment a world leader in engineering. This is highlighted by the number and quality of high level research centres and the success of its graduates in the international market place.

Teaching and Learning Environment - Staff/Student Relations

The University of Melbourne is committed to a safe, supportive and harmonious workplace, where all members have the opportunity to perform to their full potential. This is the collective responsibility of everyone, both staff and students.

Departmental Obligations

The Department is obliged to ensure that the information students need to plan their courses is accurate, timely and generally available. Much of this information is provided through the University Handbook, the Student Diary which is provided upon enrolment, and the Student Information System.

Student Feedback Questionnaires

It is a University requirement that a Quality of Teaching questionnaire be completed by each student for each subject in each Semester. These questionnaires are taken very seriously by the Department and the University. Information that is obtained from the questionnaires is used to assess both the Department and the University.

Please take these questionnaires seriously and fill them out completely and objectively. Your co-operation in this matter is extremely important and much appreciated.

Your Responsibilities as a Student

Students have responsibilities that include the following:

Staff Expectations of Students

In this Department, students are expected to attend all lectures and classes. Assessment may be based on material presented either in print or orally at scheduled lectures and classes. Important subject and course information is also provided during lectures.

Disruptive behaviour and talking by students during lectures will not be tolerated. Offenders will be instructed to leave and not return.

Active mobile phones will not be tolerated in classes. They must be turned off before entering the class venue. Offending students will be instructed to leave the class and not return.

In general, staff expect a commitment from students of one hour per week per point. If your course load is 50 points, this equates to a total of 50 hours per week (formal class hours plus additional study).

Student Commitment to Learning

To undertake the B.Eng course successfully on a full time basis, a student typically needs to commit between 40-50 hours per week of course-related study throughout the semester. A typical breakdown of the study time in an average week is as follows:

Departmental Seminars

The Faculty and Department organises a number of Seminars regularly throughout the year. These are presented by postgraduate students undertaking research in the Department or by speakers with expertise in a topic of general interest.

All undergraduate students are encouraged to attend these seminars as they are an excellent way to find out more about the Department's activities, as well as providing useful information about professional and community issues.

Email notification of seminars of interest to you will be circulated and you should therefore check your mail frequently.

Industrial Adviser Scheme

Information regarding the Industrial Adviser Scheme can be found on the Departmental website.

Student Societies

There are two student societies in operation in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering that you may wish to be involved with. They are:

Both of these student societies regularly organise activities throughout the year which you may find interesting and entertaining. Please look out for emails regarding these events.
