Environmental Engineers are responsible for managing or reducing the impacts of human activities by ensuring that the development and utilisation of natural resources occur with an acceptable environmental impact. They are involved in water and air pollution control, recycling, water supply, waste disposal, catchment management and public health issues. Environmental Engineers have a broad understanding of the environmental impacts of human activities and how to develop solutions to better manage those impacts.

Employment prospects for Engineers
Recent data from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (Dec 15th, 2005) lists Civil Engineering as an occupation currently in national shortage. Check out the full list here.
The Australian Vice-Chancellor's Commission for 2005 has published graduate statistics that show Engineering as a field of study having excellent employment prospects throughout Australia:
- Engineering is ranked 4th out of 23 fields of education, with a median starting salary of $41,000 p.a.
- 97% of Civil Engineeringing Bachelor Degree Graduates are in full-time employment.
- Female graduates in Engineering can expect the same salary as male graduates. In many education fields, female salaries are lower. (The International Comparison also shows that 23% of Engineering tertiary qualifications in Australia are awarded to females, which is the same as both the United States and the international mean.)
The Association of Professional Engineers , Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA) reported on a salary survey in their Professional Network Magazine, June/July 2005, showing:
- An average annual increase in professional engineer salaries of 5.25%.
- More than 90% of graduates began on salaries higher than minimum rates prescribed in the major professional engineer awards.
- Environmental Engineers recorded the highest average annual increase in base salaries of 7.8%.
