In Civil Engineering, we learnt basic mathematics and physics/ mechanics for the first two years, the last two years will be subjects on different specialisations in the Civil Engineering industry-structural, materials, hydrology, transport engineering, etc.
I believe what I gained from Melb Uni's engineering, is not solely on its teaching for those subjects, but it's actually how you get along with the teaching and cope with the amount of coursework you have been assigned to. It's all about training to be self-disciplined, self reliant, and a decision maker. This has significantly benefited me from coping with my current job as an engineer. Being involved in so many extra activities beside my degree course and working in the international office really benefits me a lot in many ways. I must admit, if I have not been involved in those, I probably ended up being a 'square thinker'. It definitely open your mind up to solve problems, even it's engineering related. As your mind will be trained to analyse things in all aspects, and not only the 'preferred' ones.
I am currently working as a bridge engineer (London), it is
a much specialised field to be in. The field I am in now is
not taught specifically in my course. This means that I could
adapt and pick up quickly as I already possessed a strong civil
engineering foundation - remember everything is always based
on first principles!
Most importantly, it was the student life that I enjoyed and
cherished very much. I feel very grateful to the university.
Besides keeping contact with the faculty, I still keep very
close contact with Emad, who was one of my most dedicated
lecturers. He has given me full support and encouragement
throughout my education as well as after! He has been advising
and encouraging me from job applications to career moves!
(I am sure in his job description as a lecturer does not include
after hours advice to ex-student matters!). All in all, it's
one of the best life experiences I ever had.
